New Year’s Resolutions For Injury Prevention

Welcome to 2024! Our hope is that you and your loved ones experience a happy and healthy 2024. Unfortunately, the odds aren’t always in our favor, especially since accidents are the fourth major cause of deaths in the United States. To increase your chances of having an incident-free year, you may want to pay attention to some of these tips for accident prevention from our experienced personal injury lawyers.

Don’t Ignore your Check Engine Light or Unusual Sounds

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), improper car maintenance causes more than 2,600 fatalities, 100,000 injuries leaving victims permanently disabled, and $2 billion in medical expenses, lost income and property damage. Make sure to regularly take your car for a tune-up to lower chances of an accident this year. This includes oil changes, brake pad checks, brake and coolant fluid refills, wiper replacements, and other necessary tune-ups. Be sure to regularly check that your tires are properly inflated with the right air pressure to avoid a blowout.

Have the Right Insurance Coverage

In Florida, more than one in five drivers do not have insurance coverage, or have inadequate coverage. This means that you have a 20% chance of being struck by a driver who does not have insurance if you are involved in an auto accident. Those are astonishing numbers! Are you willing to take a chance on such odds?

Consider these add-ons to your basic auto insurance plan:

  • Bodily Injury Liability coverage in the amount of $100,000 per person/ $300,000 per incident (accident).
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UIM) Coverage. Because of the high rate of uninsured/underinsured drivers in Florida, this type of coverage is necessary. UIM coverage kicks in when the at-fault driver has low Bodily Injury liability coverage (such as $10,000) or has no Bodily Injury liability coverage. In this case, liability insurance for that driver will be provided by your Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage.

*Based on your specific needs, there may be other types of coverage for you to consider.

Explore The Outdoors Safely

One of the best things about Florida is the year-round, wonderful, warm weather. This gives us a lot of options for outdoor adventures. Whether you're spending your weekends boating with your loved ones, getting dirty while mudding on an ATV, or enjoying the convenience of traveling around town with a golf cart — safety should always be the first priority.

  • Do not allow children to operate any type of motorized vehicle meant for adults, especially without supervision.
  • Always wear seatbelts when available.
  • Don't operate your vehicle (car/motorcycle/boat/golf cart) under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Never forget: you should not text and drive.
